MUSIC

The Choir

We are fortunate to have a loyal and enthusiastic choir of about 25 choristers who rehearse every Friday evening and sing at the two fully choral services each Sunday An anthem is sung at every service together with settings of the Holy Communion and of the evening canticles.

The Director of Music

Adrian Self was appointed Director of Music at the end of 1989, having been previously at All Saints Church, Cheltenham.

Concerts

There is a full programme of Saturday evening concerts between April and October each year. Many programmes are presented by visiting choirs, and recent visitors have included Ross Pople and The London Festival Orchestra, the celebrated American organ virtuoso Carlo Curley, and the Boyan Ensemble from Ukraine.

The Organ

Cartmel Priory organThe organ (in the South Choir Aisle, known as the Town Choir) was originally built by Frederick Jardine of Manchester in 1867 and rebuilt by Rushworth and Dreaper of Liverpool in 1969. In 2005 it was overhauled and a number of changes made by Principal Pipe Organs of York. There is also a small chamber organ, normally at the west end of the church, which is used during the Sunday morning Communion service to accompany the Communion anthem.

More extensive information about the history of the organs in the Priory are provided in a fascinating booklet, written by Adrian Self, available in the Priory Bookstall.
