THE FRIENDS OF CARTMEL PRIORY

Cartmel Priory'The Friends of Cartmel Priory' was founded in the 1990s. The objective is to support the Priory through prayer and in making provision so that certain improvements or repairs to the fabric of the building can be carried out. 'The Friends' also may assist in the provision of those things which are needed in the task for which the Priory is essentially intended, namely the worship of GOD and the proclamation of the Gospel. Members presently come from many parts of the United Kingdom and there are those who live abroad. Some have had connections with Cartmel and the Priory through family or local ties or were baptised or married here. There are those who have visited the Priory and have been so moved by the experience that they wish to continue to be associated with it and support it. In addition, there are local people who enjoy being linked to the Priory in this particular way. All members, wherever they happen to be, are united in praying regularly for what is happening here and also, in a small but significant way, help to ensure the fabric (and what it is here for) is properly maintained so that future generations will continue to use this very special building for the worship of GOD.

In 2003 'The Friends' was granted charitable status which means all donations now qualify for Gift Aid. This increases our income considerably.

Members receive a card with a copy of the Friends Prayer and the Aims of the Association. Twice each year, usually at Easter and Christmas, there are newsletters. In addition there is news of special events such as Founders Day and the Summer Concerts.

Recently 'The Friends' has provided new wrought iron hand rails at the sides of the steps to the north and south side-isles, lighting in the south porch, handles on the doors of the south porch for use by the disabled, a new UHF microphone for those taking services and also made a contribution towards the work carried out on the clerestory windows. Many members made generous donations to the recent 'Roof and Organ Appeal' which raised over a quarter of a million pounds.

Membership for a single member is £10 per annum or £150 for life membership; for a couple, £15.00 per annum or £200.00 for life membership. Groups (such as schools) pay a membership fee of £20.00 per annum.

Almighty GOD we ask Your Blessing on the work of The Friends of Cartmel Priory. We pray that together with those who form today's Cartmel Community, ministering to the local people, pilgrims and tourists, we may play our part in ensuring the building, received in trust from former generations, may continue to bear witness to the glory of Your Eternal Kingdom. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
